Musings from Fr. Gary
I
wish to thank the parishioners who responded to the questionnaire that had
been inserted in the bulletin in June regarding the proposed closing of
Francisco & Richmond Avenues. We had about seventy (70) responses, about
twenty (20) of these were from residents south of 95th Street. Almost all
of the responses expressed concern over the impact the closing of Francisco
would have on the parish. Most of the responses from those living north of
95th Street said the closure would have little impact on them. Those living
south of 95th said it would have some impact, but most said they would
adapt.
In
preparation for an information meeting held at the beginning of August,
members of the Parish Council tried to call active parishioners south of
95th Street. A fairly good number were contacted, and the overall response
was similar to the written ones.
As I
thought, reflected, and prayed over my opinion, I was seeing some good
elements to a closure in terms of safety for our school and religious ed
students, as well as for others who gather at the parish. The impact on
weddings and funerals would be minimal, and LCM was open to parishioners
using the new parking lot during weekend Masses. With the responses from our
parishioners, I think the positives of closing the street outweigh the
negatives. The plan to include a pedestrian walkway from 95th to 94th Street
on the east side of Francisco (that would be separated from the new parking
lot) is a benefit..
The
proposal has not been approved by the Village Board of Trustees as of August
25th. The Mayor and Building Commissioner continue to consult residents of
the Village.
And
no, LCM is not trying to buy the parish.
More
concretely, this past week we had repair on our internal sidewalks, and the
installation of two handicapped ramps, one on the church and the other at
the east end of the Little School. Your Millennium Campaign contributions at
work to improve our parish. Thank you.

Now, if someone can start doing that, a next easy step is to add the
four types of prayer (Praise, Thanksgiving, Contrition and Petition at the
end of Jesus' name. Here's something I came up with -
Jesus, I worship you as
our Savior and the true Son of God. (Praise)
Jesus, I thank you for
the gift of your cross and for my salvation.. (Thanksgiving)
Jesus, I am sorry for my
sins and ask for your forgiveness. (Contrition)
Jesus, I pray for
eternal life with you and the angels and saints. (Petition)

Prayer for Unity
Lord, make us...
One with our brothers and sisters
here in love
And one with saints that are at rest
And one with angel hosts above
And one with You, forever blest.

Many thanks to Linda and
Walter Kosary of Kosary Funeral Home for once again this year sponsoring our
parish calendars, available beginning today.

Please, if you need to bring a phone to church, remember to turn it off or
to silent “ring”.

Daily
prayer for life
Heavenly Father, as the author of life, touch with compassion the hearts of
those women and men who, with your help, have conceived human life and now
think of abortion, not parenthood. Help them to understand that their newly
created child and all children are made in your image and likeness, made for
eternal life.
Dispel their fears and helplessness and give them true and generous
hearts to love their babies and give them birth and all the needed care that
a parent alone can give. And when your children turn away from you through
abortion, penetrate their hearts to seek your loving forgiveness and healing
power.
Finally, Lord, soften the hearts of the abortionists, and enlighten all
elected officials to accept your loving grace and to recognize and protect
the inviolability and sanctity of all human life from conception to natural
death. Amen.

I
would also like to take this opportunity to encourage you to patronize the
various businesses and services that advertise in our bulletin. They make
this weekly publication possible.

If Sunday Mass is the “source and summit of our
spiritual life”,
as Vatican II stated, it makes me wonder what is
happening spiritually in the lives of some of our parishioners. Unexercised
muscles atrophy, and malnourishment produces illness and, eventually,
death.
I’ll
be happy to speak with anyone, or attempt to answer any questions,
regarding the annual report. Give me a call, send me an e-mail, or talk to
me after Mass. And, please, if there is someone you know who has quit
coming to Sunday Mass, invite them to come with you and rediscover the
richness of the Lord.
A PRAYER TO THE SPIRIT
Holy
Spirit,
who
sent Christ Jesus
to
carry the Good news to the poor,
we pray to you:
Help
us to continue your work
by
serving the poor, our brothers and sisters.
